As a senior at the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, Matthew Scannell wanted to expand his German language studies. When he enrolled in Lincoln Learning's German III course, he met his teacher, Julianne Brancadora. Her one-on-one support of his studies fueled Matthew's passion for the language and propelled him to pursue a career abroad. Matthew shares his remarkable journey below.
"During my junior year of high school, I needed to continue my German studies by taking a German III course, and my advisor informed me that the best option was to take it through Lincoln Learning Solutions.
I found out that my teacher would be Frau Brancadora, so I emailed her on the first day of school. Her reply was swift, and she committed to meeting with me one-on-one to give me practice speaking the language. I met with her regularly throughout the school year and made a lot of progress, all the while feeling satisfied knowing that I was being educated in something I love.
When I first took the German III course from Lincoln Learning, I never imagined that it would lead to studying in Germany and pursuing a career overseas!
While taking this German III course, I decided to apply for the Council on International Educational Exchanges (CIEE) study abroad program in Berlin. After studying in Berlin for a summer and becoming fluent in the language, I am now in my senior year of high school and am enrolled in Penn State Behrend’s Dual Enrollment Program. At Penn State, I am currently taking their German IV Conversation and Composition course, and I plan to go back to Germany in September to study in the Education First Program in Munich.
In the meantime, I am working as an ambassador for the CIEE, where I help students make plans to study in Germany. My goal is to teach English in Germany and inspire others to follow their passion for learning other languages. When I first took the German III course from Lincoln Learning, I never imagined that it would lead to studying in Germany and pursuing a career overseas!"
