Rochester Renewal
You may have noticed that the Rochester building is getting a dose of the 3Rs: renovation, restoration and remodeling. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our facilities team, Kris Colatriano reports the building enhancements are 75 percent complete. Take a look at the snapshots of the team in action and stay tuned for an update upon completion.
It’s a Small World
Established in the early 1990s by Ms. Foundation for Women, the event now known as Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day takes place this year on April 25. Be on the lookout for details in an upcoming email from The Commissioner. Last year’s event was a real hit among children and adults alike.
Midland gets SINCd-Up
Thanks to a grant approved by the Lincoln Learning Solutions Board of Trustees, a traffic signal upgrade is keeping students, residents and employees in Midland much safer. VP of philanthropy, George Pacinda, says it’s a win-win. “Mayor [Angela] Adkins says it’s a boon for economic development; at the same time, we addressed a safety concern for our partners PA Cyber, Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School and Lincoln Park Center.”
A Day of Service
LLS CEO Bob Clements with speaker Harold Hayes and sports broadcasting legend Chris Shovlin at the 2019 MLK Day event.
We sure hope you had a chance to attend the Martin Luther King Day event at Lincoln Park. We learned how television changed the course and perception of the Civil Rights Movement from distinguished former KDKA-TV reporter Harold Hayes. Keynote speaker, Emmy-Award-winning media personality, filmmaker and founder of 50 Shades of Silence, Darieth Chisolm, inspired us with a discussion about revenge porn and cyber harassment. In the process, we raised money for scholarships and collected food for hungry neighbors. Many of us earned Act 48 credits. It was another successful MLK Day event.
How Does Your Garden Grow?
Have you heard about how hydroponic gardens are being used in education? If not, you’ll want to read this Beaver County Times article about how MHY Family Services’ Longmore Academy is using them thanks, in part, to a grant provided by LLS. According to the article, the gardening program “offers emotional support, builds confidence, and develops life skills” for students.
Spring Cleaning
Kris Colatriano, Nicole Costlow, and Derinda Rivetti are our representatives on Rochester Borough Development Corporation’s planning team to organize an Earth Day event that will bring local businesses together to beautify the borough. Volunteers are needed to paint curbs, park benches, and community signs; plant flowers; pull weeds; and collect litter. The team is also open to project suggestions that would make Rochester a better place to live, work and play.
The main event will occur on Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to noon. Brighton Avenue will be closed to the roundabout for work to take place. Breakfast and food trucks will be available during the event. To accommodate Lincoln Learning Solutions employees, the borough will also accept volunteers on Friday, April 26. If you are interested in volunteering for Rochester Earth Day, please email HR’s Esther Anderson to sign up. We encourage all employees to consider using their Day of Caring to participate.
London Bridges
Evan-Moor’s VP of Sales, Jim O’Donnell staffs a well-stocked stand at the prestigious London Book Fair.
Evan-Moor’s International Sales Manager, Kirsten Schmieg-Watters, and Vice President of Sales, Jim O’Donnell, recently crossed the pond to build opportunities at the London Book Fair. More than 60 countries regularly exhibit at the fair, visitors come from 135 countries and there are 25,000 publishing professionals in attendance. We’re building bridges everywhere!
Bridging the Gap
In case you missed it, LLS is building upon its efforts to improve communication with everyone. In February, Bob Clements announced the launch of a new video series, “Bridging the Gap,” that allows everyone to be a fly on the wall at the executive team’s strategic meetings. Take some time to learn about the projects that are guiding where we are going as a company. Congrats to Ted Spratt and his talented team on another job well done.
Buy it…Bag it…Bring it in
We’re scouting for food throughout April. Help Boy Scout Pack 409 collect nonperishable items for needy families in our communities. Bring in everything from laundry detergent and toothpaste to peanut butter and canned goods, any food or household item really, as long as it’s not perishable, frozen or packaged in glass. Find donation receptacles in our Rochester, Beaver, and Midland (maintenance and warehouse) buildings, and at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School and Neel Elementary School. Don't forget to sign up to enter the gift card drawing.
