Communication is one of the most important aspects of being an online teacher. Effective and efficient communication can help mitigate the distance in distance learning. Assignment feedback is the best place to focus your communication. Use these tips to help individualize your feedback to students.

• Leave prompt and detailed feedback. It lets your students know you are reading their work and you care about how they perform within your course.
• Include the student’s name within the feedback. For example, you can say, “This is a very well written and organized essay, John.” Sometimes just simply including the student’s name can help personalize your feedback.
• Reference elements from the student’s work within your feedback. Commenting on specific information from the student’s assignment is a great way to individualize your feedback. The more specific you are, the better.
• Keep your feedback positive. Try to create constructive, individualized feedback by sandwiching negative comments between positive comments. Always start your feedback with a positive statement and end it in the same manner.
